Jag brukade vara rädd för mörkret när jag var liten. Mitt rum brukade bli bäcksvart, som en ögonbindel på slutna ögon. Den känslan av att inte kunna se något, fick mig alltid att tro att det var något som gömde sig i mörkret. Grenarna från trädet utanför mitt fönster brukade slå mot rutan när det blåste upp, och det lät som klor mot golvet. Jag var övertygad om att det fanns ett monster under min säng, och det brukade ta all min styrka för att våga kolla. Det var inte förens många år senare, när en lampa tändes, som jag förstod att det verkligen fanns ett monster. Det hade funnits där hela tiden, oavsett vad pappa sa. Det hade blivit verkligare och verkligare med tiden. Det fanns inte bara i mörkret heller, det gick mitt i dagsljuset. Det skrämmer mig mer än någonting. Det jag fann var att monstret jag var rädd för aldrig levt under min säng; det levde i den. Jag önskar nästan att det funnits ett monster under sängen, för det hade jag kunnat jag fly från. Det monstret ovanför måste jag leva med. Det kommer följa med mig. Jag är rädd att det kommer växa upp och tappa bort sig själv, bli något jag nu i stunden inte vet vad det är. Ta en fel sväng någonstans och komma in på fel spår och så långt bort från rätt väg att det aldrig tar sig tillbaka utan nöjer sig med platsen den befinner sig på. Jag är rädd att det ska gå vilse i livet och inte hitta tillbaka. Jag är rädd att det ska vakna en dag, tända lampan och ha tappat bort sig själv. Jag är rädd att det ska tappa den röda tråden - till sitt eget liv. Jag är inte längre rädd för mörkret. Jag är inte längre rädd för att kolla under sängen. Det enda som skrämmer mig nu är att tända lampan en dag och kolla mig i spegeln och behöva se vad som finns där.
